I have a 9/11 story to share... I was 15 years old when 9/11 happened. I was in my Honors English class at Valley View High School. We had the TV on, like most did to see what had just occurred in NYC. The news broke about ' middle eastern' people being terrorists and (I'll never forget this), a girl (who I can't remember her face or name, just how she made me feel) walks by me and says: " You did this. " I remember the biggest feeling of shame, embarrassment and hurt come over me, I was only 15 and did not know how to deal or process this information. I didn't say A WORD BACK TO HER. I HELD THAT FEELING IN. AND didn't ever really tell anyone. The fact that racism exists in a country where most of us live in "melting pot" cities and ALL of us are subject to hurt from TERRORISM of ANY RACE was BEYOND my comprehension. NOW, 12 years later, I am fully aware of this fact, and being put on a platform where my voice can be heard and have an influence, i have made it a goal to JOIN rather than SEPARATE. Pain is not selective. When it hits, it hits us all. UNITY can change our circumstances.
